Buxton: “Boy of Nine”

It’s true that we’re a bit spoiled musically in Austin. We’re so ensconced in this lovely bubble of great music here, that it’s so tantalizingly easy to overlook great artists from elsewhere in the state.

Duke of Masterson and Duchess of Whitmore Harmonize on Stages from Austin to London

Onstage, they are a striking couple, her flaming red hair mesmerizing as she dips and bends, playing exquisite fiddle while he blazes on guitar with Buddy Holly-like cool with his glasses, stovepipe trousers and hipster hat. But when they sing together, whether playing a set at the Bowery Electric or on their just-released album, Birds Fly South, (New West) they are unforgettable.

The Mastersons – Birds Fly South

I first crossed paths with The Mastersons at SxSW 2011 at The San Jose. As I sat in the sun drinking micheladas, they cranked out the twang with boy/girl harmonies that made my heart swell. I plugged that name into the ol’ smart phone and promised that I would look them up when I got home. I never did, but thankfully our paths crossed again in Austin.

We visited the New West Records showcase at SXSW 2012 to catch one of our favorite new bands, Buxton. Due to a gap in our schedule, I met up with Oz about an hour before Buxton’s set and about 5 minutes into our conversation, The Mastersons hit the stage. One song in and I looked at Oz and asked “Didn’t we catch these guys last year? And didn’t we think they were awesome?”

The film, featuring 42 country-specific versions, will be available free of charge on May 1 to coincide with the "Occupy Guitarmy" music march, led by the artist himself.

Activist and musician Tom Morello has had his finger on the political pulse of the world, as well as his guitar, for several years now. So it comes as no surprise that the Harlem-born songwriter would deliver a free multi-cultural documentary with an emphasis on social inequality.

Whiskey Wednesday with Robert Ellis at Stubb's

In the world of today's country chart toppers, "country" as a genre definition has developed some derogatory connotations among those listeners who consider themselves knowledgeable musical consumers.
